JAMPventures: Recruitment & Outreach

2022 has been a year filled with new adventures for the Joint Admission Medical Program. Join us as we explore all the exciting things happening with JAMP!

[Joel's Welcome Josh Article Here]

Joshua Anzaldúa, M.S.W. as the has been hard at work crafting strategies for expanding innovative recruitment and outreach initiatives including a summer internship road trip with JAMP Director, Dr. Joel Robles, a First-Generation Medical Student Seminar, and an upcoming JAMP Fall Tour!

A JAMP Summer Internship Road Trip

Summer 2022 was an exciting time for JAMP students and administration as partner medical schools hosted JAMP summer internships in-person after being held virtually the last two years. JAMPers engaged in various academic, cultural, and professional enrichment opportunities based on eight foundational summer internship goals. Medical school preceptorships, providing clinical experiences, learning what it's like to be a medical school student are among the many exciting opportunities JAMPers experience.

JAMP's Director and Associate Director, Dr. Joel Robles and Mr. Joshua Anzaldua, road tripped across the Lone Star State to engage with current JAMPers at each host medical school. From Dallas, to Houston, San Antonio, and across the Texas borderlands, Dr. Robles and Mr. Anzaldua met with summer interns and had valuable conversations spanning various topics including MCAT preparation, the TMDSAS application process, and their overall summer internship experience.

JAMP extends its deepest thanks to all partner medical schools, coordinators, and all personnel involved in planning and ensuring the JAMP 2022 summer internship experience was both engaging and meaningful for all JAMP summer interns.

Amp Up the JAMP: A 2022 Fall Tour

Let’s rock ‘n’ roll! This fall JAMP is hitting the road on its 2022 JAMP Fall Tour! Between the dates of September 6 - 14, 2022, JAMP representatives will visit up to 20 partner public and private universities and colleges across seven different regions in the Lone Star State.

What is the 2022 JAMP Fall Tour? The two primary goals of this pilot tour are to strengthen JAMP visibility at partner schools and promote student application submission.

JAMP aims to interact with students at partner universities/colleges across several regions whether through virtual/in-person campus open houses, college fairs, pre-med student organization meetings, manning a recruitment table in a health professions building, coffee chats, or meet ‘n’ greets. Although the JAMP Fall Tour is a pilot effort, JAMP hopes to further develop this initiative in the upcoming years as the organization prepares for an anticipated growth in the number of medical school partnerships and annual JAMP student cohort sizes.

Until then—stay tuned and keep an eye out for as JAMP representatives as they might be rockin ‘ at a college/university near you!

Inagural First Gen-Medical Student Seminar

Have you ever been curious of what being a first-generation college student and a medical school student looks and feels like? If you have, wonder no more!

The Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) and the Texas Medical & Dental Schools Application Service (TMDSAS) hosted a inagural First-Gen Medical Student Seminar exploring this unique student experience.

The First-Gen Medical Student Seminar streamed virtually on Wednesday, July 13, 2022 bringing together an audience of students, parents, and others from all over Texas and the country who shared interest in learning about the first-generation pre-med student pathway. The live stream kept the attention of over XXX audience members and—within just two weeks—the seminar recording generated over 2,600 views on YouTube!

The first-gen seminar featured a guest speaker and presentation by Dr. Felix Morales, a first-generation medical school graduate, practicing medical physician, and Associate Dean of Admissions at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine. The seminar then helped demystify medical school pathway with a myth debunk ice breaker, a brief JAMP information session, and an exciting conversation between current first-gen medical school students, a parent of a first-gen med student, and the seminar audience. The panel explored what being a first-generation medical school student means to them, challenges/barriers seminar they faced and how they overcame such adversities, how they balance school, home and work life, and shared words of wisdom with audience members who are also on the first-generation pre-med student pathway.

If you missed the First-Gen Medical Student Seminar live stream, the recording can be found on the Texas Health Education Service YouTube channel or the QR code to the right along with dozens of other videos, playlists, podcasts, and resources for exploring the pre-med education pathway.
