TMDSAS Entry Year 2027: Key Application Updates and Important Resources

As the TMDSAS EY 2027 application cycle approaches, several updates have been introduced to support clarity, transparency, and alignment across the application process. These changes reflect ongoing collaboration between TMDSAS and the Application Content Enhancement (ACE) Workgroup, a statewide group of admissions professionals, advisors, and stakeholders working to improve application content and policy. 

This year’s updates focus on three key areas: policy updates, application enhancements, and expanded applicant resources.


Updates to Application Policies 

TMDSAS has updated its Code of Professionalism to reflect evolving expectations—particularly around the use of emerging technologies and applicant conduct. 

AI Statement from Member Institutions  

“As our schools continue to adapt to evolving technologies, we recognize that generative AI tools—like those used for brainstorming, organizing, or editing—are now part of the academic and professional landscape. You may choose to use these tools to help prepare your application materials. However, all final responses submitted through TMDSAS must be your own work. Your application should reflect your original thoughts, voice, and intent. You are responsible for reviewing and approving everything you submit, and we expect your responses to be accurate, truthful, and representative of your individual experiences.” 

Professional Conduct Expectations 

Updated guidance reinforces expectations that apply throughout the entire application cycle, including: 

  • Professional and timely communication with TMDSAS and member institutions  
  • Respectful engagement in all interactions  
  • Maintaining confidentiality of the admissions process  

Applicants should approach all interactions—including interviews—as professional, evaluative spaces. 

Professional Presentation Guidance 

Applicants are expected to submit a professional, high-resolution headshot with a plain background and appropriate attire. 


Additional Updates to the Application 

Several updates have been made to the TMDSAS application itself to improve clarity, data collection, and the applicant experience. 

Application Fee 
  • Increased to $235  

Essay Updates 

Updates to essay prompts and requirements include: 

  • Dental Personal Statement – Updated prompt (view here)
  • Personal Characteristics Essay – Updated prompt and revised character limit (2,500 characters) (view here)
  • New Podiatry Essay – Prompt aligned with the UTRGV SOPM mission (view here)

Personal Information & Socioeconomic Data 

Enhancements include: 

  • Expanded Parent/Legal Guardian relationship options  
  • Expanded options for who can be listed under Relatives in Medicine 
  • Additional housing/socioeconomic response options  
  • Refined question on caregiving responsibilities during schooling 


TMDSAS Socioeconomic Status (SES) Indicator: Important Context for Applicants

The SES indicator is derived from multiple questions related to an applicant’s socioeconomic background. We share this information for transparency and to help applicants understand how the indicator is used in the admissions process. 

TMDSAS member institutions consider the SES indicator as one component of a holistic review of your application.   

Importantly, the SES indicator does not tell the full story of any individual applicant.  All applicants regardless of backgrounds may face significant personal, academic, or life challenges not captured by the socioeconomic indicator. 

Activities Section Enhancements 

New fields have been added to improve how applicants document experiences: 

  • Institution/Organization field 
  • Option to indicate virtual activities  

Application History (Reapplicants) 

Reapplicant data in this section of the application will now roll over between cycles (excluding responses to the short-answer questions.) 


New EY 2027 Application Guide 

The updated TMDSAS Application Guide provides comprehensive, step-by-step instructions for completing the application and reflects all current updates for the Entry Year 2027 cycle. 

Applicants and advisors are strongly encouraged to review the guide in the preparation process to better understand expectations, requirements, and timelines.

The ACE Workgroup's Role

Many of this year’s updates were informed by the work of the TMDSAS Application Content Enhancement (ACE) Workgroup. 

The ACE Workgroup serves as a collaborative, statewide advisory group that brings together admissions professionals, advisors, and TXHES staff to: 

  • Identify opportunities to improve application content  
  • Address common applicant questions and challenges  
  • Recommend updates aligned with evolving admissions practices  
  • Ensure application policies and content remain clear, effective, and compliant  

The workgroup operates as a think tank, providing recommendations to TMDSAS leadership and the Academic Advisory Council, helping ensure that updates reflect both institutional priorities and applicant needs.
