TXHES Appoints Inaugural Statewide Nursing Advisory Council for Feasibility Study
AUSTIN, Texas (October 31, 2025) — The Texas Health Education Service (TXHES) has convened the Nursing Advisory Council, a statewide body uniting 30 nursing education leaders to strengthen collaboration
and expand access to nursing education across Texas.
Established under House Bill 2851, the Council is charged with developing recommendations and an implementation plan
for a centralized nursing application service operated by TXHES at The University of Texas System. This initiative marks a transformative
step toward a more student-centered, transparent, and data-driven admissions process
designed to support future nurses, empower institutions, and help close the state’s
nursing workforce gap.
To ensure every nursing school’s voice is represented, TXHES will conduct focus groups, interviews, and surveys statewide, gathering comprehensive input to inform both the feasibility study and the final
implementation plan outlined in the legislation.
“We’ve brought together deans of nursing programs and experts in technology, workforce,
and policy from across the state to inform the plan,” said Dr. Matthew Meeks, Executive Director of TXHES. “This collaboration will help shape an admissions model that reflects the needs
and strengths of Texas’s nursing education community.”
While the Council represents a sample of nursing programs, all nursing schools in
Texas will have opportunities to contribute feedback as the Council's work progresses.
