UTRGV School of Podiatric Medicine Earns Initial Accreditation, Strengthening Texas Training Pathways

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) School of Podiatric Medicine (SOPM) has achieved initial accreditation from the Council on Podiatric Medical Education (CPME), marking a significant moment of progress for medical education in Texas.

Initial accreditation affirms UTRGV SOPM's compliance with national standards for academic quality, curriculum, clinical training, faculty qualifications, and institutional support, with approval granted through 2029.

Established in 2022, UTRGV SOPM is the first and only podiatric medical school in Texas, creating vital in-state training pathways and supporting the state’s contribution to the national podiatric physician workforce. The program was intentionally designed to support physician workforce development while addressing gaps in access to specialized foot and ankle care, particularly in medically underserved communities such as the Rio Grande Valley.

Dean Javier La Fontaine, DPM, highlighted the achievement as a testament to sustained collaboration and long-term commitment across the UTRGV community and its clinical partners throughout the region.

UTRGV reported that SOPM students have demonstrated strong academic outcomes, including high performance on the American Podiatric Medical Licensing Examination (APMLE) Part I. The school is preparing to graduate its inaugural class in Spring 2026, an important step in strengthening Texas’ physician workforce pipeline.

Recruitment is currently underway for the Fall 2026 entering class.

Why Podiatric Medicine?

Podiatric physicians specialize in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of conditions affecting the foot, ankle, and lower extremity. They play a critical role in managing chronic diseases such as diabetes, treating sports and workplace injuries, and improving mobility and quality of life—particularly for aging and high-risk populations.

For students exploring podiatric medicine, UTRGV’s accredited School of Podiatric Medicine represents a Texas-based pathway for training as a foot and ankle physician, with applications processed through TMDSAS.
