UT Tyler School of Medicine and JAMP Partnership Strengthen Texas' Future Physician Workforce

The recent opening of the new UT Tyler School of Medicine building marks another significant milestone in the institution’s continued growth and its expanding role in preparing future physicians to serve communities across East Texas.

In partnership with the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP), the school is helping strengthen the futurepipeline of physicians while expanding opportunities for highly qualified, economically disadvantaged Texas students to pursue medical education and ultimately serve communities across the state.

Located within Tyler’s medical district, the facility creates expanded opportunities for students to train alongside physicians, residents, nurses, and healthcare professionals serving communities throughout East Texas. By bringing education, clinical care, and collaborative learning together in a shared environment, the building strengthens the school's mission of preparing physicians equipped to address the evolving healthcare needs of the region, including those in rural and underserved communities.

The school has also become an important partner in statewide physician pathway initiatives, including JAMP, which supports highly qualified Texas students pursuing careers in medicine. Through partnerships such as JAMP, UT Tyler School of Medicine contributes to a broader effort to strengthen the future physician workforce while expanding opportunities for students to pursue medical education in Texas.

TXHES leadership recently visited the newly opened facility, gaining a firsthand look at the educational and clinical spaces that will support future generations of healthcare professionals. The visit highlighted the value of continued collaboration among educational institutions, healthcare organizations, and workforce development partners working to address healthcare needs across Texas.

“The opening of our new School of Medicine building is an incredibly meaningful milestone for all of us at UT Tyler and for the communities we serve across East Texas,” said Dr. Sue M. Cox, dean of the UT Tyler School of Medicine. “This facility reflects the dedication of so many partners who share our vision of improving health through education and innovation. It allows us to more fully prepare physicians who are not only highly skilled but deeply connected to this region and its needs.

“Importantly, this is about people—our students, our patients, and our communities—and the opportunity to expand access to care and build a stronger healthcare workforce for generations to come.”

As UT Tyler School of Medicine continues to grow, the opening of its new medical education facility reflects a long-term investment in physician education, healthcare innovation, and workforce development across East Texas. Together with community partnerships, clinical training opportunities, and pathway programs such as JAMP, the facility represents another step toward strengthening access to care and preparing future physicians to serve Texas communities for generations to come.
