New Digital Engagement Platform Expands Support for JAMP Scholars
This spring, the Joint Admission Medical Program (JAMP) expanded its use of Canvas
as part of a broader University of Texas System initiative to modernize digital engagement
and learning platforms across participating programs and institutions. For JAMP, the platform is helping strengthen scholar engagement, streamline communication,
and provide more consistent support for students across Texas.
As a statewide pipeline program serving students from 68 undergraduate institutions across Texas, JAMP relies on clear communication, coordinated
programming, and strong partnerships between scholars, JAMP Faculty Directors, Medical
School Coordinators, medical schools, and JAMP Administration. The use of Canvas provides a more unified platform to support these efforts while enhancing
the Scholar experience across each stage of the program.
Through Canvas, JAMP is building a centralized digital space where scholars can access important program updates, complete
required assignments, engage in academic and professional development activities,
and connect with peers across the state.
“Through our partnership with Canvas, JAMP is modernizing how we support and engage
scholars across the state of Texas,” said Dr. Nina Gonzalez, Director of TXHES Strategic Initiatives & JAMP. “This infrastructure allows us to scale intentional scholar support, strengthen
academic and professional development, enhance statewide connectivity, and create
a more unified learning and engagement experience across undergraduate institutions,
medical schools, and JAMP Administration. Canvas is helping position JAMP alongside institutions of higher education, utilizing innovative learning platforms to better prepare the next generation of Texas physicians.”
Creating a More Unified Scholar Experience
The platform has allowed JAMP to create dedicated Scholar Hubs for each cohort, providing students
with a consistent and accessible home base for program information. These hubs include
important announcements, program expectations, required tasks, academic resources,
timelines, and modules designed to support scholars throughout their JAMP journey.
This structure helps ensure that scholars receive the same core information regardless
of their undergraduate institution, summer internship site, or geographic location.
By housing program materials in one central platform, JAMP can better support consistency,
transparency, and accountability across the scholar experience.
Supporting Academic and Professional Development
In addition to creating a more unified experience for all scholars, Canvas has expanded
JAMP’s ability to provide structured academic and professional development programming.
Through Canvas modules, JAMP can deliver content related to medical school preparation,
MCAT planning, application readiness, professional identity development, research
preparation, and summer internship expectations. The modules support scholar engagement while helping students develop the academic
habits, professional skills, and preparation needed for success in medical school
and beyond.
Enhancing Collaboration Across the State
One of the most important benefits of Canvas has been its ability to strengthen connection across
a statewide program. JAMP scholars are located at undergraduate institutions across
Texas and participate in summer internship experiences at medical schools throughout
the state. Canvas provides a shared digital environment where scholars can interact,
learn from one another, and build community beyond their individual campuses.
Canvas also supports collaboration among JAMP partners. Dedicated spaces for Medical
School Coordinators and JAMP Faculty Directors have created opportunities to strengthen
communication, share resources, and support alignment across institutions. As JAMP
continues to develop these collaborative spaces, Canvas will serve as an important
tool for improving coordination across the program’s statewide network.
Building Infrastructure for the Future of JAMP
JAMP's adoption of Canvas reflects both the program's commitment to scholar success
and its participation in broader UT System efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure,
collaboration, and engagement across educational programs.
By centralizing resources, streamlining communication, and creating new opportunities
for engagement, the Canvas platform helps JAMP better meet the needs of a growing and geographically distributed scholar
community. Through this implementation, JAMP is strengthening its ability to prepare
scholars academically, professionally, and personally as they move toward medical
school and future service to communities across Texas.
As JAMP continues to expand and refine its use of the platform, Canvas will remain
an important part of the program's efforts to provide scalable, accessible support
for future scholars pursuing careers in medicine across Texas.
